The Jaguar S Type is a luxury saloon produced by Jaguar from 1963. In marketing terms, the 1963 S Type was essentially a plusher version of the company's popular Mark II but had independent rear suspension. The S Type shared the entire monocoque shell with the Mark II including doors, roof & windscreen, had the same bonnet & wings with a slightly revised front end. The rear end was completely restyled around the new suspension. Heavier than the Mark II it was therefore slower but had a better ride. It is thought that Jaguar developed the S Type as a replacement for the Mark II. The earlier car had been developed under the code name "Utah Mk II", and the S Type was the "Utah Mk III".
The Jaguar 420 is a luxury saloon produced by Jaguar from 1966. With the new 4.2 engine it shared its bodyshell with the Jaguar S Type, but with front end styling similar to the larger Mark X saloon. The Jaguar 420 car came with a Marles Variomatic power steering system and a revised braking system with larger front calipers than that of the S Type. The Jaguar 420 was twinned with a more luxurious model called the Daimler Sovereign, this was the first time that a Daimler did not have its own Daimler engine but was merely a rebadged Jaguar 420 with minor trim differences. |
